TAX EXEMPT ORGANIZATION SEARCH TOOL

The IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search Team is being recognized for the creation of a tool to search across several different sources of information related to more than 1.1 million IRS-recognized charities that hold nearly $4 trillion dollars in assets. Every year, citizens and organizations donate billions of dollars to charitable organizations across the country. They rely on the IRS to help them determine the validity of those charities and their tax-exempt status.  Tax-exempt organizations can vary from very small entities with no staff to large, multinational organizational entities with thousands of employees. This search tool gives citizens the ability to search for these types of organizations across multiple databases in one location on the IRS.gov website. The Tax Exempt Organization Search is an online search tool that allows users to select a tax-exempt organization and check certain information about its federal tax status and filings.

The team included officials from the IRS Tax Exempt and Government Entities, Information Technology, and Online Services. The newly built search platform allows citizens to check whether an organization is eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. In addition, citizens can search for a particular organization, download copies of determination letters and its most recent three years of return filings—including five different return types—from that organization.

This new version of the search tool gives citizens the ability to scan several different databases that previously had to be scanned individually based on the type of tax filing. Most citizens don’t know the type of tax filing for an organization and therefore had to conduct several different searches for a single organization. It vastly improved the user interface and for the first time allowed citizens to have an experience that is optimized for mobile devices.

The team also improved the way the tool was presented on IRS.gov. When it came time to launch the updated version of the application, the team published web pages and redirected web traffic to help ensure a quick transition from the old application to the new one while minimizing downtime. They successfully reduced the inventory of pages that supported the various applications and consolidated them into a much smaller web presence. They modified and consolidated 37 webpages and overhauled 6 pages that now provide clear access into the newly revamped application. Their work took what was a confusing and frustrating customer experience that was spread across multiple platforms and gave citizens a clean and simple interface to find the information they need. The application was also made responsive, making it easier to view and use in mobile devices.

Every year, American citizens contribute billions of dollars to charitable causes. In many cases, taxpayers may deduct those donations from their taxable income. This arrangement is a benefit both for those who wish to make such contributions and to the charitable causes receiving those contributions. Unfortunately, scammers may abuse this arrangement and encourage well-intentioned taxpayers to donate to fake charitable organizations. During the 2019 calendar year, taxpayers used the Tax Exempt Organization Search function on IRS.gov over 3.65 million times to easily determine whether an organization is legitimately approved as a valid non-profit for tax purposes. This tool protects taxpayers and legitimate charities by preventing scammers from stealing money from the millions of citizens who donate to charitable causes every year.
