The Service to the Citizen Program recognizes those public servants and their industry partners who demonstrate excellence in delivering services that impact the publics' lives and rebuild trust in government. These champions of change will be honored at the Mayflower in Washington, DC on September 13, 2024.
 
We face historic challenges, from a global pandemic resulting in the need for an economic recovery, a climate crisis, and racial inequalities. As recent challenges have shown, how the government serves the public, protects the systems and information we rely on, responds and adapts to new opportunities and crises makes a great difference in how people feel about their government. Delivering excellent, equitable and secure services and improving the customer experience is one of the key priorities in the President's Management Agenda (PMA) and is supported by Executive Order 14058, “Transforming Federal Customer Experience and Service Delivery to Rebuild Trust in Government.”  
 
Executive Order 14058 directs Federal agencies to put people at the center of everything the Government does, with simple, seamless, and secure services that meet people where they are.  Every interaction between the Government and the public—whether it involves filing taxes or renewing a passport—is an opportunity to deliver the value, service, and efficiency that the public expects and deserves. By centering our work around the people we serve, we can deliver a more secure and responsive Government.
 
By focusing on improving government services, we can not only reduce the administrative burden on the public and provide services to underserved communities in a more streamlined manner, we can build efficiencies into the government, improve employee engagement and rebuild trust in government. 

Award Details:

Citizens depend on the government for services in their everyday lives and during emergencies. They deserve a 21st century experience and a government that works for them. When a citizen needs government during important life events, it’s important that the government is there to serve and able to access government services anytime, anywhere, and on any device. The Declaration of Independence states:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,

that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. ——

Protecting the health and safety of the public is one of the core functions of government.  Additionally, the government enables citizens to live the American dream.  They provide loans and services for citizens to start a small business, buy a home, or pursue higher education in a college or university.  Whether they are a veteran, a senior citizen, a student, a traveler or the victim of a national emergency, the government touches your life at important moments from birth to death and beyond at work and at play.  Individuals and businesses expect Government customer services to be efficient and intuitive, just like services from leading private-sector organizations. 

There are heroes across the government that work tirelessly to provide the best services possible under sometimes difficult rules, politics and circumstances. They deserve to be recognized. Recognition of these commitments will go a long way towards changing the culture in government.  The Service to the Citizen™:  Champions of Change Program is a groundbreaking program that has the potential to begin the service transformation process.
